How to book Uber and Lyft rides without a smartphone

Modified on Wed, Sep 9 at 11:12 AM

You don't need a smartphone or app to get an Uber or Lyft on your Sunbeam phone. As long as your phone can make calls and receive text messages, you can request a ride and get your driver's details by text. Payment is handled by a card you set up in advance, so you won't pay the driver directly.

Option 1: Call Uber directly (no extra fee)

Uber's own Call to Ride line charges the same fare as the app. It's Uber only and runs limited hours.

  1. Dial 1-833-USE-UBER (1-833-873-8237).
  2. An agent helps you set up an account and add a card if needed. English or Spanish.
  3. Give your pickup and destination.
  4. You'll get a text with your driver's name, vehicle, and arrival time. Your card is charged only after the trip.

Option 2: Call or text Tremp (Uber and Lyft)

A text or call-based service that books Uber or Lyft anywhere those companies operate. It adds a service fee to the fare and is fully automated.

  1. Call 732-479-7080 and enter your card details to create an account.
  2. Call or text Ride to 732-479-7080, then give your pickup and destination.
  3. Tremp replies with ride options and fares; confirm your choice.
  4. You'll get a text with the driver's name, number, and ETA.

Option 3: Call or text GoGoGrandparent (Uber and Lyft, 24/7)

An independent concierge service that books Uber or Lyft for you around the clock, with live operators available. It adds a per-minute fee on top of the fare, so check current pricing when you call. No app or separate rideshare account needed.

  1. Call or text Ride to 1-855-464-6872.
  2. Set up your account and add a card the first time you call.
  3. When you're ready to book aride, call and follow the prompts, then give your pickup and destination.
  4. Rides can also be scheduled in advance.

Option 4: Book from a computer or tablet

If you have a second device, you can book a ride in a browser at m.uber.com (Uber) or ride.lyft.com (Lyft). You'll sign in with your phone number, and you can get some ride updates by text on your Sunbeam phone. The booking itself has to be done on the other device.
