Here are some popular authenticator apps, and whether you can bring their codes into the Sunbeam Authenticator app on your phone.
Note: If your current app can't export or sync its codes, you can still switch to the Sunbeam Authenticator app. You'll just need to set up new codes for every website you use. For organizations that use a specific app, see the note below.
| Authenticator App | Compatibility | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1Password | ✅ | Export your data in 1Password as a .1pux file or a CSV file, then open Authenticator>Settings>Import codes. |
| 2FAS | ✅ | Export a backup file in 2FAS, then open Authenticator>Settings>Import codes. Works with or without a backup password. |
| Aegis | ✅ | Export an unencrypted file in Aegis, then open Authenticator>Settings>Import codes. Encrypted Aegis files are not supported. |
| Apple Passwords | ✅ | Export your passwords in Apple Passwords as a CSV file, then open Authenticator>Settings>Import codes. Only the verification codes are imported, not your passwords. |
| Authy | ❌ | Authy does not let you export your codes. |
| Bitwarden | ✅ | Syncs automatically. Open Authenticator>Settings>Sync Account and select Bitwarden. You can also import a Bitwarden .json export, with or without a password. |
| Duo Mobile | ❌ | Duo does not let you export your codes. For a work account, see the note below. |
| Ente Auth | ✅ | Export your codes in Ente Auth as plain text, encrypted, or HTML, then open Authenticator>Settings>Import codes. |
| Google Authenticator | ✅ | In Google Authenticator, choose Transfer accounts>Export accounts. In the Sunbeam Authenticator app, press Menu, select Scan Code, and scan each QR code shown. |
| LastPass Authenticator | ✅ | Export your accounts to a file in LastPass Authenticator, then open Authenticator>Settings>Import codes. |
| Microsoft Authenticator | ❌ | Microsoft Authenticator does not let you export your codes. For a work or school account, see the note below. |
| Okta Verify | ❓ | Controlled by your organization. See the note below. |
| Proton Authenticator | ✅ | Export your codes in Proton Authenticator, then open Authenticator>Settings>Import codes. Works with or without a password. |
| RSA SecurID | ❓ | Controlled by your organization. See the note below. |
Sync with Bitwarden
If your codes are saved in Bitwarden, the Sunbeam Authenticator app can stay in sync with your Bitwarden vault. Add, edit, or delete a code on your phone or in Bitwarden, and the change shows up in both places.
Open Authenticator>Settings>Sync Account, select Bitwarden, then press Connect. Sign in with your email and password, or with an API key. If you use a self-hosted server, enter its address first.
The Sunbeam Authenticator app syncs when you open it, a few seconds after you change a code, and when you press Menu from the Codes list and select Sync Now. It does not sync in the background, so open the app to pick up changes made elsewhere.
When you add a new code, the Sunbeam Authenticator app asks where to store it: on this phone only, or in Bitwarden. Only codes stored in Bitwarden are synced.
Import from another app
For apps marked ✅ in the table, export your codes from your current app and copy the file to your phone. Then open Authenticator>Settings>Import codes and choose the file. Review the codes found, choosing to add, skip, or replace each one, then confirm the import.
For Google Authenticator, there's no file to copy. Scan its QR codes with the Sunbeam Authenticator app instead. If your phone can't scan them, take a photo of each QR code with another device, copy the photos to your phone, and import them the same way as a file.
Files that aren't encrypted hold your codes in plain text, so anyone who reads them can use your codes. Delete the file after you import it.
Keep using your old app too
After importing, you can keep your old app on your computer or tablet, and both will show the same codes. This is a copy, not a sync, so the two apps don't update each other.
If you add or change a code in your old app, export and import again. Codes you already have are marked Already in your codes, so you can skip them. If you delete a code in one app, delete it in the other app too.
To copy codes the other way, open Authenticator>Settings>Export codes.
When you set up a new code on a website, scan the QR code with both apps at the same time. Both apps then have the new code without exporting again.
Apps marked ❌
Some apps, like Authy, Duo Mobile, and Microsoft Authenticator, keep your codes locked inside the app. Their backups can only be restored into the same app, so there is no way to move the codes out.
You can still use the Sunbeam Authenticator app with these accounts. Sign in to each website, turn off two-step verification, then turn it back on and scan the new QR code with the Sunbeam Authenticator app. If you want to keep your old app too, scan the same QR code with both apps.
Note: Work and school accounts are usually managed by your organization, not by you. Apps like Okta Verify and RSA SecurID, and work accounts in Duo Mobile or Microsoft Authenticator, often use sign-in approvals sent to your phone or codes issued by your organization. The Sunbeam Authenticator app does not support sign-in approvals, and these codes can't be exported. Ask your IT department whether you can use a standard authenticator app that shows 6-digit codes, such as one marked ✅ above. If they allow it, they'll give you a QR code to scan with the Sunbeam Authenticator app.
